Ohio has lost one its finest defense attorney's. Donald Schumacher, president of the Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, passed away Friday, June 6, 2008.
Don enjoyed a 34-year career devoted to representing indigent defendants. He was extremely active in both the Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the central Ohio group. He served in many capacities in OACDL: secretary (1999, 2000, 2001, 2005), membership chair (2002, 2005), president-elect and president. He was also chair of the Annual Death Penalty Seminar for 8 years. He dedicated countless hours to teaching and mentoring young lawyers. He was always complimentary and able to phrase any criticism in helpful terms. Don was the recipient of the first ever OACDL Lifetime Achievement Award.
Don represented 49 clients accused of capital murder. Only one went to Death Row.
