Tuscarawas County Public Defender

The Tuscarawas County Public Defender's office is seeking a self-motivated individual for the position of Assistant Public Defender. This position will represent indigent clients in legal proceedings in juvenile, misdemeanor, and felony courts at all stages of court proceedings in the courts of Tuscarawas County.

The ideal candidate should have a demonstrated dedication to indigent defense, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently. The candidate needs to have the ability to function in a fast-paced, high caseload environment. The ability to relate to indigent clients with special needs is essential. Qualifications for the position include a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school, be admitted to the Ohio bar and in compliance with Ohio CLE requirements. A valid Ohio driver's license is also required.

Assistant Public Defenders maintain a full case load requiring legal representation for criminal offenses. These representations require regular client contact, research, advocacy and record keeping, as well as preparing legal briefs and motions. This is a fulltime position, therefore, the outside practice of law is not permitted.

The starting salary range is $60,000 based upon experience and county guidelines, plus the full range of benefits including medical insurance and PERS.
