The Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers is proud to announce that veteran criminal defense attorney David Klucas has been selected as the recipient of its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his decades of distinguished service to the legal profession, unwavering commitment to justice, and extraordinary advocacy on behalf of individuals accused of crimes throughout Ohio.
David Klucas has devoted more than 35 years to the practice of criminal defense law, earning statewide respect for his courtroom skill, professionalism, and dedication to protecting constitutional rights. A native of Vermilion, Ohio, Klucas earned his undergraduate degree from Ashland University before graduating from the University of Toledo College of Law in 1988. He began practicing law in 1989 and founded his own criminal defense practice in 1997, focusing on trial and appellate advocacy in both state and federal courts.
Over the course of his career, Klucas has tried more than 100 jury cases and has become widely recognized for handling some of Ohio’s most serious and complex criminal matters. He is among the few attorneys to secure an acquittal in a capital murder trial and has no capital client under a sentence of death. His work has consistently reflected the highest standards of criminal defense advocacy and a steadfast belief in the rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
In addition to his trial work, Klucas has made significant contributions to the legal community through education and mentorship. He has lectured extensively on topics including DNA evidence, capital defense litigation, federal conspiracy cases, and media relations in high-profile criminal matters. He has also appeared as a legal commentator on Court TV, helping educate the public about the criminal justice system.
The Lifetime Achievement Award is among the highest honors bestowed by the Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and recognizes attorneys whose careers exemplify excellence, integrity, leadership, and dedication to the defense of individual liberties.
